Challenge your mind at the Konane Tournament for Kamaaina Sunday at Iolani Palace Play konane at Iolani Palace on Oct. 11 for Kamaaina Sunday with tournament play, Hawaiian music, hula and hands-on cultural workshops.

HONOLULU (HI Now) - Playing konane is about slowing down, thinking ahead and connecting through a game that has sharpened minds in Hawaii for generations.

That spirit comes to life on Sunday, October 11, as The Friends of Iolani Palace welcomes kamaaina back to the palace grounds for a day rooted in culture, community and playful competition.

President and CEO Paula Akana and konane tournament organizer Kapena Baptista are inviting first time players and seasoned strategists to experience the royal pastime in the same place where Hawaiian history lives.

The Konane Tournament takes place in Hale Koa, the Barracks at Iolani Palace, with check in from 9 a.m. to 11a.m. and tournament play from 11 a..m. to 2 p.m. The tournament is open to players ages 12 and older, it is limited to 16 competitors and advance online registration is encouraged.

Guests who are not competing can still join in with casual konane play in Hale Koa. The day also features hula from Hui O Kapunahala under Kumu Hula Carolee Nishi, live music from Holei, hanafuda with Hanafuda Hawaii, mahjong with the Bad Luck Club, and hulu hairpin and brooch workshops with Kawika Lum-Nelmida.

Kamaaina Sunday is a plan ahead outing for families, friends and anyone who wants to learn something new while enjoying the palace. Workshop space is limited and in person registration begins at 8:30 a.m. for guests ages 18 and older, with one workshop per guest.
