HONOLULU (HI Now) - The upcoming Kamaʻāina Sunday on September 13 offers an opportunity for families and visitors to gather and immerse themselves in the Hawaiian lifestyle and performing arts cultural traditions.
The event will be filled with local music and incredible performances that capture the heart of the community. Guests can enjoy hula presentations by Hālau ʻO Nāpualaʻikauikaʻiu under Kumu Hula Sallie Yoza, followed by the energetic Kamehameha Schools Kapālama Hawaiian Ensemble directed by Kumu Kaleo Trinidad.
The stage will also feature Kamalani alongside Hālau Hemomi Nani Makamae with Kumu Hula Gigi Kidder and Glory Pollard, providing a soundtrack of traditional and contemporary sounds.
Hands-on activities invite attendees of all ages to learn traditional skills and engage with cultural practitioners. You can test your strategy with Kōnane lessons taught by Kapena Baptisita, or craft your own floral kūpeʻe and practice Lauhala weaving.
For a deeper experience, master weaver Naomi Nascimento will host a special cultural workshop focusing on creating a Lauhala Anthurium.
