HONOLULU (HI Now) - Preserving a vibrant cultural heritage requires active community support and dedicated educational programs.
The annual Okinawan Festival serves as the primary fundraiser for the Hawaii United Okinawa Association, which directly benefits over fifty local clubs and programs. When you participate in this festive weekend, you are directly funding educational opportunities, cultural preservation efforts, and community connection. Two of the many vital beneficiaries are the Hawaii-Okinawa High School Student Exchange Program and the Okinawan Genealogy Society of Hawaii.
The student exchange program provides local youth with life-changing opportunities to experience Okinawan culture firsthand while building deep friendships across the ocean.
At the same time, researchers with the genealogy society assist local families in tracing their ancestral lineages and discovering their unique family histories. These efforts ensure that Okinawan traditions, values, and identities remain strong for future generations in Hawaii.
The 44th Annual Okinawan Festival is happening this weekend September 5-6 at the Hawaii Convention Center, where attendees can visit booths for both of these incredible programs.
