HONOLULU (HI Now) - “The people gather; Oʻahu, the gem of the oceans.” This is the heart behind Hoʻolau Kanaka, a landmark cultural festival celebrating its 10th anniversary on Sunday, August 23rd at Moanalua Gardens. Presented by Puaʻāinahau Foundation and Hālau Nā Mamo O Puʻuanahulu, this non-competitive gathering offers residents and visitors a welcoming space to connect with Hawaiʻi’s living culture.
The celebration highlights the depth of Hawaiian tradition. The stage will feature performances from 14 top hula hālau and a special showcase by Heretama Nui, alongside live music from celebrated artists like Sean Naʻauao, Kuʻuipo Kumukahi, Hoku Zuttermeister, Ei Nei, and Waipuna. Hosted by emcee Mele Apana, the day-long festival beautifully honors both hula and mele.
Beyond the stage, families can explore a local craft fair starting at 8:30 a.m. and experience interactive cultural demonstrations like Lei Hulu, Ulana Lauhala, and Kuʻi Kalo. Tickets are available through participating hālau haumāna or by calling (808) 892-HULA. Learn more at hoolaukanaka.com.
