HONOLULU (HI Now) - Hawaii is taking a major step toward strengthening workforce development through the creation of the Hawaii State Community School for Adults (HSCSA), a statewide unification of McKinley Community School for Adults and Waipahu Community School for Adults.
The new statewide model allows Career Foundations, an innovative curriculum developed under the leadership of Principal Helen Sanpei, to expand beyond its original service area and reach learners across Hawaii. The curriculum introduces students and adult learners to career readiness, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, workforce development, and industry-connected learning opportunities.
Filming at Mililani Middle School highlights how the impact of HSCSA extends far beyond adult education. Through Career Foundations and partnerships with K-12 schools, students can begin exploring career pathways years before entering the workforce. Communities such as Mililani, which were previously outside McKinley Community School for Adults’ traditional service area, can now benefit from innovative programming made possible through the statewide unification. What was once a regional model can now be delivered statewide, ensuring students and adult learners across Hawaii have access to the same opportunities.
Supporters say the effort advances Hawaii’s broader P-20 vision by creating stronger connections between K-12 education, adult education, workforce development, higher education, government agencies, and industry partners. The goal is to build a more seamless pathway from classroom to career while preparing residents for Hawaii’s future workforce needs.
