HONOLULU (HI Now) - This fall, pickleball takes over the Hawaiʻi Convention Center because it is becoming one of the easiest ways to turn movement into community. The Hawaii Pacific Health ESPN Honolulu Open returns October 8 through 11 with a big indoor setup that welcomes first timers, seasoned players, and kūpuna looking for a fun reason to stay active and connected.
Tournament Director Tadd Fujikawa says this is the second year the event will bring the energy back with 33 plus indoor courts and divisions for amateur and open play, including men’s, women’s, and mixed brackets, plus senior levels. New this year, a college division is joining the lineup with universities including the University of Hawaiʻi, Indiana, and Virginia, adding a fresh next generation vibe while keeping the tournament rooted in local players.
Dr. Sandra Noon of Hawaiʻi Pacific Health points to a bigger ripple effect beyond the scoreboard. Pickleball supports cardiovascular health, balance, coordination, and strength, and it can also reduce stress while giving people a place to belong. That social connection matters, especially for older adults, because showing up to play can be a simple way to fight isolation and build friendships through shared routines.
Players can still catch early registration through July 31, and anyone who registers is entered into a drawing for roundtrip tickets to Japan. Registration remains open through September 15, and the tournament is also looking for volunteers to help keep the courts running smoothly.
