HONOLULU (HI Now) - The Honua Finals, the World Cup of interscholastic surfing, returns to Ala Moana Bowls, bringing top talent to local waves for families who cannot always travel to chase big opportunities.
This year features 120 surfers from 40 high schools, with teams from New Zealand, Japan, Canada and California, plus Maui, Kauai, the Big Island, and Oahu. CUE Collaborative Co-Founder Sunny Kazama says the event is about access and community, building on a major milestone for the islands after Hawaii became the first and only state to adopt surfing as a high school sport.
Team Champions will compete for the Queen of Makaha Rell Sunn Championship Trophy, honoring Aunty Rell’s legacy, with competitors like Joie Kaiu of Kamehameha Schools and Kielan Jardini of Kahuku High School in the spotlight.
