Baking with Hawaii Gas HI Now is at Halekulani with Pastry Chef Michelle Baldomero as she shares more information about their bake shop and specialty items!

HONOLULU (HI Now) - Halekulani Bakery Shop is the first Halekulani branded food and beverage venue conveniently located across the street at Halepuna Waikiki. The bakery is the culmination of art and science featuring delectable artisan breads, a contemporary coffee bar with specialty coffees / pastry pairings, confectionary take-away items, and of course, our coconut cake!

The Bake Shop makes all of the pastries and desserts for all of Halekulani’s outlets:  La Mer, Orchids, House Without A Key, Halekulani Bakery, Afternoon Tea in the Veranda, and In-Room Dining. Their signature coconut cake is served at all of their restaurants and it made its debut on April 9, 1959…so it is celebrating its 65th birthday next month! The cake was originally made with a custard filling and fresh grated coconut. Although the sponge cake portion remains the same and people swear that it still tastes like the original, the other elements have been upgraded – from a custard filling to an amaretto pastry cream and instead of fresh grated coconut, coconut flakes now dues the entire cake. It is now served with a raspberry coulis and crème anglaise.

Halekulani, our “house befitting heaven,” has been welcoming guests with gracious hospitality for over a century. In 1917, Halekulani was established as a stylish resort for vacationers.  Mitsui Fudosan America, our parent company purchased the hotel in 1981, renovated, and reopened in 1984. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary under the stewardship of Mitsui Fudosan.
