HONOLULU (HI Now) - Staying active and sharing knowledge with others are the true secrets to a long and purposeful life.
For 101-year-young Madge Kano, that purpose comes alive through yarn, needles, and a heartfelt passion for teaching her community. Madge has spent more than six decades mastering the crafts of knitting and crocheting, learning entirely on her own from books rather than formal classes.
Today, her greatest fulfillment comes from welcoming new faces and passing her skills down to fellow community members.
Every week, Madge visits the local community center with help from her daughter to create intricate handmade treasures and guide eager students.
Her creations range from custom holiday Santa Claus designs to miniature crocheted luggage tags that she happily gifts to friends and travelers. When working on projects, Madge works at her own pace and embraces the craft with patience and determination, taking pride in perfecting every stitch.

Born and raised in Honolulu, Madge attended Manoa Elementary School, Washington Intermediate School, and McKinley High School, working hard in family kitchens from an early age to build a lifelong work ethic.
Now at 101, she encourages everyone to take time to relax, connect, and pick up a creative hobby of their own.
