Big Island crocheter shares handmade rugs, talk story and community joy Big Island crafter Hasegawa shares her love for crocheting rugs, learning as a teen and finding joy in craft, community and talk story.

HONOLULU (HI Now) - Handmade rugs carry stories, and Big Island crafter Hasegawa stitches hers with pride, patience and aloha.

A proud mom of accomplished children, she found her creative home in crochet, turning simple strips of fabric into cozy, colorful rugs that reflect care in every loop and weave.

Her love for the craft began as a teenager when she watched a friend’s sister crochet during afternoon chores and asked to learn. That one lesson sparked a lifelong passion that now takes five days of dedication for each rug, with one day for cutting and sewing strips and four days for weaving.

After trying knitting, she returned to what she knows best, and with guidance from teacher Madge in her latest class, she keeps building skill and confidence stitch by stitch.

Beyond the rugs, it is the connection that keeps her coming back each week. She loves to socialize, talk story and laugh with fellow makers while encouraging younger generations to stay active and enjoy what they love. Viewers can catch her story and handmade inspiration on HI Now Daily.
