HONOLULU (HI Now) - Building a stronger and more resilient island home begins with open, meaningful conversations about the challenges we face together.
From addressing food security and healthcare access to navigating climate adaptation, finding local solutions requires a supportive space where everyone has a voice. Sparking this positive community action is the driving force behind a weekly campus gathering that brings diverse perspectives together to inspire real change.
The weekly Kuleana and Community Talk Story Sessions at the University of Hawai‘i-Hilo serve as a vital hub for this collaborative inspiration. Guided by dedicated faculty members Karla Hayashi and Carolina Lam, the sessions evolved from a successful campus course into a popular weekly event.
Now entering its fourth year, the program welcomes students, faculty, and island residents to gather in a safe and welcoming environment to discuss pressing local issues.
Participants meet every Friday at noon at the Kilohana Academic Success Center, turning thoughtful discussions into meaningful community responsibilities. This weekly series offers a perfect opportunity to plan ahead, connect with neighbors, and discover how to make a lasting impact on Hawai‘i Island.
