HONOLULU (HI Now) - Chefs Omarlys Fernandez (owner of Guaiqueri Empanadas) and James “Da Bald Guy” Martin (owner of Da Bald Guy Food Truck) brought big flavor and big laughs back to the HI Now kitchen - straight from Kitchen Scraps season 2, the regional Emmy Award-winning season.
They served up a hearty pasticcio described as a Venezuelan-style lasagna with layers of pasta, bolognese, béchamel, and mozzarella. Plus a creamy flan for dessert made with condensed milk, condensed coconut milk, vanilla, and a little lime zest.
Then came a quick, weeknight-friendly “Foodland Five” recipe that still delivers major wow factor. This includes: cucumber bulgogi boats made with local cucumbers, bulgogi, wombok kimchi, Kewpie mayo, and green onions, finished with sesame seeds. It was a simple reminder that great food does not have to be complicated, it just needs great ingredients and the right people around the table.
