Open Keys is helping local musicians step into the spotlight

Open Keys is helping local musicians step into the spotlight Open Keys helps Hawai‘i musicians shine with free performance opportunities, handling venues and logistics so artists can focus on the music they love.

HONOLULU (HI Now) - Every musician deserves a stage, and Open Keys is making that happen for artists across Hawaii. This youth-led nonprofit on Oʻahu creates free, life-changing performance opportunities for musicians of all skill levels and instruments, helping remove the barriers that can keep talented performers from sharing their music.

Founded by Punahou students Maxwell Shei and Sebastian Dang, Open Keys was created to support musicians “in the middle.” The artists who are ready to grow but may not have access to venues, funding, or performance support. Open Keys takes care of the details, from venue management to rental fees, insurance, and logistics, so performers can simply show up ready to shine.

What makes Open Keys especially inspiring is that it was built by two teenagers with a big vision for Hawai‘i’s music community. Through performances, partnerships, and community support, the organization is helping musicians gain confidence, connect with audiences, and bring more live music to local venues.

Open Keys is continuing to grow and is inviting musicians, teachers, venues, volunteers, and supporters to be part of the movement. To learn more, support their mission, or get involved, visit theopenkeys.org or follow @theopenkeys on Instagram.
