HONOLULU (HI Now) - Every year, over 3,000 people in Hawaii suffer a stroke, making it the number one cause of chronic disability in our state. It is a life-changing event
that impacts not just the patient, but their entire family. To help meet this growing need, REHAB Hospital of the Pacific has launched its new Stroke Center of Excellence, designed to support survivors through every stage of recovery.
As Hawaii and the Pacific’s only rehabilitation hospital, REHAB offers a full continuum of stroke-focused care. From intensive inpatient rehabilitation to outpatient therapy, plus community-based programs that help patients rebuild strength, confidence, and independence. These include opportunities such as stroke wellness classes, adaptive sports, and a stroke support group.
REHAB leaders emphasize that while skilled nursing facilities play an important role, REHAB is uniquely designed to maximize recovery after severe strokes and other serious injuries or illnesses. With patients seeing a significantly higher rate of returning home compared to those who transition to skilled nursing care.
Patients are supported by a specialized, multidisciplinary team, including doctors, neurological and stroke-certified nurses, therapists, and dietitians, all dedicated to stroke recovery. REHAB also continues investing in advanced rehabilitation technology aimed at accelerating brain and body healing after stroke.
