HONOLULU (HI Now) - When the military and the community come together face-to-face, it creates space for understanding and stronger partnerships. Supporting that connection statewide is the Military and Community Relations Office, MACRO. MACRO’s mission is to enhance mutual respect, deepen understanding, and promote collaboration on strategic issues important to both the U.S. Department of Defense and the State of Hawai‘i.
That spirit will be on display as the U.S. Army marks its 251st birthday and invites the public to Army Community Day at Fort DeRussy on June 12, 2026. Major General Okamura, a Kamehameha Schools graduate who began his career as a Military Police Officer, says this year’s event is especially meaningful because it also ties into America’s upcoming 250th birthday and the national “Freedom 250” commemoration.
Established before the Declaration of Independence, the Army helped win the nation’s freedom and continues to defend it today. The Freedom 250 theme, “Winning Independence, Sustaining Independence, Celebrating Independence.” This reflects that legacy, and organizers say the Army’s birthday celebration is “nested” within the larger national milestone.

Army Community Day will feature interactive displays, vehicles, and aircraft to explore, plus live music from the Army Band, food, and family-friendly activities. It’s also a chance to meet Soldiers, learn about Army history, and hear about the Army’s 200+ career paths—from technology and engineering to medicine and leadership development.
A highlight of the event is the Mana O Ke Koa Ceremony, honoring those who strengthen Army-community relations in Hawai‘i. This year marks the award’s 20th anniversary, and this year’s recipient joins past honorees like Senator Daniel K. Inouye (2013), Governor Linda Lingle (2009), Senator Daniel K. Akaka (2016), and Representative Mark Takai (2017).
Major General Okamura says the Army’s connection to Hawaii goes beyond its mission through disaster response, school support, volunteer service, and youth programs like JROTC and ROTC. He adds that Army Community Day is also a way to recognize Army families and veterans for their service and sacrifice, strengthen trust, celebrate milestones together, and inspire the next generation.
