HONOLULU (HI Now) - Hawaii musician Nathan Aweau stopped by HI Now Daily to help kick off the weekend with some live music. The four-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner for Male Vocalist of the Year has been busy traveling and just wrapped up a month in Japan and is heading back next week for another three-week tour.
Aweau has been writing music basically his whole life, he just didn’t always know it. He remembered being in third or fourth grade, strumming his ukulele and singing something he made up on the spot. His dad, a classically trained music teacher, asked what song it was. Aweau’s answer? “I don’t know, I just did it myself.” These days, melodies still hit him out of nowhere, sometimes in the middle of the night, and he’ll jump up, grab his guitar or piano, work it out, and then head back to bed.
His new album is called “Mahalo”, and the title says it all. The song it’s named after is essentially Aweau counting his blessings, his Hawaiian roots, his family, and the incredible people he’s met touring the world for over 30 years. He also looked back warmly on his 16 years performing with Don Ho, who he called a second father.
