HONOLULU (HI Now) - Hawaiian Airlines is shaking things up for passengers flying between Hawaii and the mainland. Starting July 1st, main cabin guests can preorder their meals before they even step on the plane. It’s easy, 14 days before your flight, you’ll get an email linking you to the Hawaiian Airlines website where you can browse the menu, check out photos, and lock in your order. By the time you board, your meal is already waiting for you.
The airline tapped Chef Sheldon, a Hawaii-born, globally recognized chef, to design the menu, and he took the job seriously. He and his team cooked through more than 100 recipes before landing on three crowd-pleasing dishes rooted in local comfort food: mochiko chicken, corned beef hash, and cheeseburger mac. There’s even a keiki option, banana pancakes with a syrup that tastes like fresh-baked banana bread. One fun challenge? Figuring out how to keep that mochiko chicken crispy at 30,000 feet. Chef Sheldon’s solution: a special crunchy topping passengers add themselves.
Don’t worry, the things you already love about flying Hawaiian aren’t going anywhere. Free drinks, local snacks, and that sweet treat at the end of the flight are all sticking around. The new preorder program is just an added way for the airline to bring a little more of Hawaii’s culture and flavors to passengers around the world. As Chef Sheldon put it, it’s a huge responsibility, and one he’s excited to take on.
