Rotary International sparks mental health conversations in Hawaii

HONOLULU (HI Now) - Rotary International is helping spark important conversations around mental health through a new initiative focused on emotional wellness, peace building, and community connection. Kathleen Rhoades Merriman, a representative with Rotary District 5000, joined Hi Now Daily to share how the organization, with about 50 clubs across Hawaii and roughly 20 on Oahu alone, brings like-minded people together to serve local and international communities. From scholarships and youth programs to hands-on service projects, Rotary offers something for everyone, with members shaping their club’s focus based on what matters most in their community.

Mental health has become a central priority for Rotary International after the organization’s international president lost his brother to suicide, an experience that put the issue squarely on the radar for clubs worldwide. With statistics showing that 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime, Rotary District 5000 has been actively spreading awareness, including reminding the community that 988 is the number to call for help. Rotarians are also encouraged to partner with organizations like NAMI and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to expand access to resources.

Locally, Rotary clubs are being asked to go beyond awareness and genuinely check in with one another, championing the simple but powerful question, “How are you, really?” Rotary is also growing its membership, recognizing that doing good for others benefits your own well-being too. Those interested can visit rotary5000.org or search “Rotary in Hawaii” to find a nearby club, and if one isn’t the right fit, try another!
