HONOLULU (HI Now) - Ono Seafood is marking more than 30 years of serving traditional poke rooted in family recipes, quality fish and the kind of community connection that keeps generations coming back. The Kapahulu staple, founded on grandma’s signature Miso, Spicy and Secret Shoyu sauces, remains a fully family-operated business spanning three generations, with mom still inside scooping rice and cutting sashimi well into her late 80s.
The family has expanded its footprint across Oahu, with the Hawaii Kai location run by siblings Tehani and Noah, and the Poke Bowl Patrol mobile unit bringing their signature bowls to the Kakaako Farmers Market every Saturday morning. The truck, operated by the father-daughter team of Ruby and her dad, parks on the wharf side of the market next to The Baker Dude and the Omao Man and Sando Katsu trucks.
The family credits Farm Lovers Market director Pamela Boyar for opening the door to the farmers market community more than 14 years ago, providing a pathway for weekend entrepreneurship that helped raise four kids in Honolulu. The market life, they say, taught their children real-world skills including planning, marketing, sales and communication, values they carry forward today.
Poke Bowl Patrol is also available at the East West Center at UH and for private events. Follow along at @ono.seafood on Instagram or reach out at pokebowl.patrol@gmail.com.
