Oahu Is getting Its first Sonic Drive-In and the menu Is worth the wait

HONOLULU (HI Now) - Hawaii’s only Sonic Drive-In is currently located in Maui, but that’s about to change. The beloved fast-food chain is gearing up to open a new location in Kapolei on Oahu, possibly as early as May. The Sonic team says they are working hard to make it happen and are thrilled to bring the full experience to a new island audience.

To get a taste of what’s coming, we flew to Maui with Takeo Prather from Sonic to check out the existing location. The chain is best known for its wildly customizable drinks and slushies, think a dirty strawberry Diet Coke with sweet cream, coconut, and lime, or the signature Cherry Limeade made with hand-squeezed limes. On the food side, the Sonic Smasher is the number-one seller and already a local favorite, alongside the Foot Long Chili Cheese Coney, Groovy Fries, Tater Tots, and freshly fried Mozzarella Sticks.

Don’t sleep on the secret menu either. The Orange Cream Slush, half slush, half ice cream blended together, tastes just like an orange creamsicle in drink form. And keep an eye out for the Cherry Smash, a brand-new item no one has tried yet, debuting when Kapolei opens. Once it does, come by, grab your favorite drink, and let your imagination run wild.
