HONOLULU (HI Now) - When Troy and Ala Keolanui started OK Farms Hawaii, they weren’t just thinking about what to grow. They were thinking about who they could bring together.
OK Farms runs a weekly community-supported agriculture, or CSA, produce box program, giving local families direct access to fresh, locally grown food. The farm also welcomes school groups, offering keiki a hands-on connection to the land and the cultural traditions tied to it. A community soccer field on the property reflects the Keolanuis’ vision of the farm as a true neighborhood gathering place.
At the heart of the operation is a commitment to preserving what came before. OK Farms cultivates native Hawaiian plants and is developing an agroforest using traditional Hawaiian crops — work the couple sees as an investment in the next generation.
Visitors can explore most of the 320-acre property in about two hours, taking in crops and the scenic Rainbow and Kaimukanaka waterfalls. OK Farms Hawaii is located at 1570 Maikalani St. in Hilo.
