HONOLULU (HI Now) - The Hawaiian Humane Society is offering $17 adoption fees for all adult dogs, cats and small animals through Sunday, March 22, at its Mōʻiliʻili Campus and Kosasa Family Campus at Hoʻopili. Both locations are open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The promotion, called the Lucky in Love Adoption Special, comes as the organization’s kennels fill following last week’s Kona low storm. Brandy Shimabukuro, director of communications and marketing, said adoptions typically slow during storms while the number of animals entering the shelter increases.
“An adoption special is one of the most meaningful tools we have to create space for the animals who need us most,” Shimabukuro said.

Adopters can play for additional prizes
Visitors to either campus can play a game for a chance to win enrichment toys and supplies for their new pet, or a fully waived adoption fee.
Community response during the storm
More than 40 families opened their homes through the organization’s Couch Crashers short-term foster program during the storm, providing temporary placement for adoptable dogs. Shimabukuro said the foster stays have given staff more insight into how the animals behave in a home setting, which she said helps improve placement outcomes.

St. Pitties’ Day also observed this week
The Hawaiian Humane Society is also marking St. Pitties’ Day, an annual recognition of pit bull and bully terrier mixes in shelters. Shimabukuro said these dogs are consistently among the longest-staying animals in the organization’s care.
One dog currently available is Cowboy, a 2-year-old, 52-pound terrier mix who has been at the Mōʻiliʻili Campus since January 2026. His adoption fee is fully waived through the Reid Krucky Memorial Fund. He is also eligible for the Couch Crashers foster program for households interested in a short-term placement.
