HONOLULU (HI Now) - Kauhale housing matters because it provides deeply affordable homes for people who earn the least and have the fewest housing options in Hawai‘i. Designed to serve people experiencing homelessness and those at risk of losing housing, kauhale offers stability, dignity, and connection through community based housing that is affordable at incomes under $30,000 per year.
A statewide survey of more than 700 Hawai‘i residents conducted by Ward Research shows strong public support for this approach. Most residents recognize kauhale housing as a meaningful solution to Hawai‘i’s housing and homelessness crisis and support expanding it for both people experiencing homelessness and the working poor. HomeAid Hawai‘i and the Statewide Office of Homelessness and Housing Solutions believe in this model, but lasting change requires the support and participation of the broader community.
