HONOLULU (HI Now) - ʻAha Pūnana Leo, Hawaiʻi’s pioneering Hawaiian language nest preschool program, is inviting families to apply ahead of its March 1 priority enrollment deadline. The mission is clear: drive and inspire change to ensure a living Hawaiian language in Hawaiʻi and beyond — and it starts as early as nine months old.

Unlike traditional preschools, ʻAha Pūnana Leo immerses keiki fully in the Hawaiian language from day one, with culture woven into every part of the daily rhythm. Teachers model the language patiently, and families don’t need to speak Hawaiian at home to participate. The program offers a proven pathway to Hawaiian-medium K–12 education, with a strong parent and community network supporting families along the way.

What sets ʻAha Pūnana Leo apart goes far beyond language. The program is building perspective — shaping how children see themselves and their community. From oli and asking permission to enter a space, to developing deep respect for classmates and teachers, keiki are growing into confident contributors with a strong sense of identity. As the school puts it, they are building strong language, strong identity, and strong community leaders starting at age three.

Tuition assistance is available through programs such as Preschool Open Doors (POD) and the Pauahi Foundation. Applications are open for the infant-toddler program (9 months) and the preschool program (ages 3–5). Apply today at ahapunanaleo.org and follow @ahapunanaleo on social media for updates.
