HONOLULU (HI Now) - The CCH Department of Environmental Services is launching G.R.O.W. (Green Recycling Organic Waste), a new pilot program beginning April 1 that allows residents to include food waste in their green compost cart. With nearly 180,000 tons of food waste entering Oʻahu’s waste stream each year, the initiative aims to reduce landfill use and protect island resources for future generations.

The pilot will roll out in Hawaiʻi Kai, Kailua, Kalihi, Mililani, Nānākuli, and Waipahu, with island-wide expansion planned for October 1, 2026. Residents are reminded: no plastics, no bags — include the food only.
