Puʻuhonua Mākeke: A community marketplace rooted in culture and connection

Puʻuhonua Mākeke: A community marketplace rooted in culture and connection Puʻuhonua Mākeke is a once-a-month gathering uplifting Native Hawaiian businesses while strengthening culture, language, and community in Waimānalo.

HONOLULU (HI Now) - Puʻuhonua Mākeke is more than a marketplace it’s a once-a-month gathering created to uplift Native Hawaiian business owners of all ages while strengthening community within our ahupuaʻa. Rooted in economic development and social advancement for Puʻuhonua ʻo Waimānalo, our Lāhui, and Hawaiʻi nei, the mākeke brings together Kanaka vendors, artisans, farmers, purveyors, and entrepreneurs who are building together.

At Puʻuhonua Mākeke, you can expect dozens of Kanaka-owned vendors, free bread and eggs while supplies last (donated by Hawaiʻi Foodservice Alliance), a lei-making workshop, $1 raffles and prizes. As well as some of my own ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi learning decks (Action Verbs, Mauka, and Makai), homemade seamoss gel, and custom bikinis inspired by Native Hawaiian flora.

What makes this mākeke special is the heart behind it, bringing community together, spreading culture and language through our products, and incorporating the ahupuaʻa system through trading with one another.

Mahalo for supporting Native Hawaiian businesses and helping us grow something rooted in culture, care, and community
