HONOLULU (HI Now) - Hawaiʻi’s Military and Community Relations Office (MACRO) continues to help connect communities and the military through collaboration, transparency, and trust. In this segment, leaders from Maui County and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reflect on the successful restoration of the Olowalu Temporary Debris Storage site, a critical part of recovery following the 2023 Lahaina wildfires.
Joined by Mayor Richard Bissen, Lt. Col. Adrian Biggerstaff of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and John Smith from Maui County’s Office of Recovery, the discussion highlights how interagency coordination made it possible to safely manage and remove nearly 400,000 tons of wildfire debris—while honoring commitments to the land and the West Maui community.
Completed in December 2025 and formally recognized with a pule ceremony in January 2026, the project set a new standard for responsible recovery. With environmental testing results publicly available and continued collaboration planned for 2026, the effort reflects MACRO’s mission to foster mutual respect and shared responsibility across Hawaiʻi.
