Light the world: Support local nonprofits with Hawaii’s Giving Machines

Light the world: Support local nonprofits with Hawaii’s Giving Machines Support local nonprofits this holiday! Donate at Hawaii’s six Giving Machines or online at givingmachine.org.

HONOLULU (HI Now) - Governor Josh Green and First Lady Jaime Green are leading Hawaii’s annual Light the World campaign, making it fun and easy to support local nonprofits through six giving machines statewide. Brooke Ward, program manager for Hale Kipa—one of the 16 beneficiary organizations—joined the effort to show how donations can make a real impact.

As the holiday season approaches, the giving machines are helping spread holiday cheer by providing a unique way for residents and visitors to donate gifts and services. The machines were unveiled Saturday at Ala Moana Center by the Governor and First Lady, with statewide coordinator Mufi Hannemann emphasizing the memorable philanthropic experience.

“The concept combines the joy of giving items and services with a unique philanthropic experience, making it a memorable way to contribute to the community,” Hannemann said.

This year, the machines are located across three islands in collaboration with 16 local nonprofit charities:

  • Maui: Whalers Village
  • Oahu: Pearlridge Center, Ala Moana Center, Polynesian Cultural Center
  • Hawai‘i Island: Queens Marketplace, Prince Kuhio Plaza

The machines will remain open for donations through New Year’s Eve, except for Ala Moana Center, which will stay open on New Year’s Day. Hannemann noted that funds raised on each island will stay on that island.

“It’s this time of year where we have to be charitable,” Hannemann said. “Seeing people give, you know their hearts are touched. It brings a warm feeling, especially as we get into the Christmas season—my favorite time of year.”

Last year, residents and visitors contributed nearly $245,000 to support local nonprofits.

There’s roughly two weeks left to donate this year. Donors can visit a machine in person or give online at givingmachine.org to help uplift the community.
