HONOLULU (HI Now) - The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services (ENV) is taking a hands-on approach to educating residents about the serious impacts of FOG — fats, oils, and grease — on our island’s wastewater system.

Public Information Officer Jenn Boneza demonstrates how everyday kitchen habits can lead to hardened grease buildup, costly blockages, and environmental damage. Through simple visuals like jars of bacon grease, liquid oil, and ice water, Jenn shows why FOG behaves like “plaque in an artery” inside our pipes, and how the solution is surprisingly easy: Cool it. Can it. Trash it. With videos of real fat-burgs, practical at-home steps, and a focus on protecting our homes, beaches, and wallets, ENV encourages everyone to take small daily actions that make a big difference for our island’s future.
