Champions of Change: Hawaii Correctional Industries empowers inmates for a brighter future Hawaii Correctional Industries empowers inmates with vocational training, job skills, and motivation for a brighter future through self-funded programs.

HONOLULU (HI Now) - Hawaii Correctional Industries (HCI), a self-funded division of the Hawaiʻi Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, is dedicated to vocational training and offering inmates career pathways for successful reintegration into the community. Administrator Shawntay Yasuda, with 21 years of experience, emphasizes that HCI provides not only job skills but also teaches the importance of building relationships and teamwork.

Programs include pre-apprenticeship opportunities in collaboration with unions, groundskeeping contracts, and uniform sewing for Adult Corrections Officers. Upcoming initiatives include a digital production program and a dental lab program. HCI’s most significant contribution is motivating inmates to change, helping them envision a new future. The community can support HCI by joining their team as Industry Specialists or partnering to provide job training opportunities at dcr.hawaii.gov.
