HONOLULU (HI Now) - In Hawai‘i, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women, affecting over 1,200 annually. The Hawai‘i State Department of Health emphasizes the importance of early detection through regular mammograms, which can save lives by finding cancer when it’s easier to treat.
While some risk factors like age and family history are unchangeable, women can lower their risk by maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, limiting alcohol, and avoiding tobacco.
The DOH’s Hawai‘i Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program offers free mammograms to eligible women aged 40-64 who face financial or insurance barriers. For more information on the program visit health.hawaii.gov/cancer and @StartLivingHealthyHI on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
