Community partners support Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s goal to reduce recidivism At Hālawa Correctional Facility’s Keiki Day, fathers reunited with their children, sharing hugs, games and hope for stronger family bonds.

HONOLULU (HI Now) - For more than 20 years, Momi Akana, executive director of Keiki O Ka ‘Āina, and her team have helped those serving time in correctional facilities build and maintain strong connections to their families despite being separated.Akana’s team adds another dimension of support and aloha for those in the correctional facilities, complementing the work of the Hawai‘i Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

“We remind parents who are in the correctional facilities about their goal — to ultimately be reintegrated back into the community and to be able to enjoy being a part of the lives of their children and grandchildren,” Akana said.

Director Tommy Johnson of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said community partners like Keiki O Ka ʻĀina serve a vital role and support the department’s emphasis on rehabilitation. “They are true champions of change,” Johnson said.

Keiki O Ka ʻĀina plays an important role in helping those in our custody at the Women’s Community Correctional Center, Hālawa Correctional Facility and Waiawa Correctional Facility maintain bonds with their children.

“Keiki Day events are critically important for parents to maintain relationships with their children,” Johnson said. “Family reunification plays a vital role in rehabilitation.”
