Bridging Generations: 15 Craigside Summer Camp Brings kupuna and keiki together through purpose and play Keiki and kūpuna unite at 15 Craigside’s Summer Camp — a joyful, intergenerational experience filled with culture, learning, and aloha.

HONOLULU (HI Now) - At the heart of the Arcadia Family of Companies is a mission to enrich the lives of Hawai‘i’s kūpuna by providing communities where they can thrive with purpose, surrounded by trusted, caring teams. One of the most heartwarming and impactful examples of this mission in action is the annual 15 Craigside Summer Camp, a unique intergenerational experience that brings together residents and the children of employees for three unforgettable days of learning, teaching, and aloha.

What makes this summer camp extraordinary is not just the activities — it’s who leads them. Every session, from hula and bon dance to ikebana, taiko drumming, crafts, and even plantation games, is taught entirely by the residents themselves. For many kūpuna, this is a powerful opportunity to share their cultural knowledge, talents, and life experiences in ways that inspire the next generation.

The idea for the summer camp, affectionately named “Ho‘opili” (to come together and unite as friends), began with a spark of inspiration in 2022 when children visited 15 Craigside for a “bring your keiki to work” day. That day, resident Mrs. Irene Nakamoto shared the art of ikebana with a few curious kids, planting a seed that would soon blossom into a full-fledged camp. With help from fellow resident Wendy Yoshimoto and Programs Manager Leilynn Yamamoto, the dream became a reality in 2023.

Planning for the camp begins early in the year, with a committee of residents and staff working together to create a schedule of meaningful activities. Each one is designed to strengthen not just skills, but relationships. Campers are encouraged to reflect, collaborate, and challenge themselves, while kūpuna are empowered by purpose and joy as they lead.

The outcomes are felt deeply by both generations. Keiki walk away with greater respect, empathy, and connection to their elders, while kūpuna experience improved wellness, joy, and a sense of purpose. There’s laughter, teamwork, discovery — and most importantly, a strong sense of ohana.

On the final day of camp, the children showcase everything they’ve learned in a celebration attended by residents, staff, and family members. It’s a beautiful full-circle moment that brings pride, smiles, and sometimes even happy tears.

The 15 Craigside Summer Camp is more than a program — it’s a testament to what happens when a community comes together across generations to live, learn, and thrive with intention.
