HONOLULU (HI Now) - If you’re not already following Rickey Kamai (@rickeykamaimusic), now’s the time to jump on board. Known for his infectious energy and heartfelt lyrics, this Hawai‘i-based artist is doing more than just making music — he’s building bridges through sound. As the heart behind RIK Entertainment, Rickey’s mission is clear: connect people through music, honor the past, and keep the vibes fresh and fun.

His latest release, a reggae single titled “Slow Down”, marks a personal milestone in his musical journey. Written over a decade ago during his high school years, the song is a reflection of where it all started. It was the first track he ever finished, and the one that made him believe in his ability to create music. Now, sharing it with the world brings everything full circle, reminding him of the dream that continues to drive him today.

Rickey’s passion and dedication have also earned him a spot in the On The Rise program under the Henry Kapono Foundation. This initiative provides mentorship and paid opportunities for emerging Hawai‘i musicians, helping artists like Rickey navigate their paths in the local music scene. It’s an experience that’s not only elevated his craft but deepened his connection to the community. Supporters can learn more or get involved by following the Henry Kapono Foundation online.

Looking ahead, Rickey’s first EP, Paid Homage, is set to debut this August. A heartfelt tribute to the musicians who paved the way, the project blends Hawaiian and Country influences to create something entirely his own. Inspired by legends like Darren Benitez, Ka‘au Crater Boys, and Hui Ohana, the album is being produced by his friend and mentor Jeff Rasmussen. Together, they’re crafting a sound that celebrates heritage while introducing something fresh to the next generation of listeners.

Much of Rickey’s artistry is rooted in his upbringing and cultural education. A proud graduate of Hālau Lōkahi, a Hawaiian public charter school, he learned under esteemed kumu like Leo Akana and Hinaleimoana — both acclaimed for their writing and composition. Those early experiences instilled a deep respect for Hawaiian culture, which continues to influence the way he writes and performs today.
