Project S.A.V.E.: Helping Hawai‘i’s keiki thrive through clear vision and early intervention Project S.A.V.E. helps kids thrive by identifying vision issues often mistaken for learning or behavior problems.

HONOLULU (HI Now) - When a child struggles with reading, focus, or behavior in the classroom, the first instinct is often to assume a learning disorder or behavioral issue. But for many keiki, the root cause isn’t neurological — it’s visual. That’s the message behind Project S.A.V.E. (Supporting Academic & Visual Excellence), founded by Dr. Hank Makini, OD, to raise awareness about how vision problems can affect learning and development.

Dr. Makini, a practicing optometrist since 1987 and the founder of Eyes Plus, Inc., launched Project S.A.V.E. to bridge the gap between education and eye care. Through free community trainings, school outreach, and parent education, the program helps families, educators, and healthcare providers recognize the often-overlooked signs of vision-related learning challenges — before children fall behind or are misdiagnosed.

With a firm belief in early intervention and compassionate, personalized care, Dr. Makini’s work has transformed the way vision is understood in educational settings. His background in sports vision laid the foundation for Academic Vision Care, a program designed to strengthen visual skills, boost self-confidence, and support student success inside and outside the classroom.

Joining him in this mission is Dr. Maika Teal, Associate Optometrist at Eyes Plus, Inc., who shares Dr. Makini’s commitment to empowering families with the knowledge and care they need to help their children thrive. Together, they provide comprehensive eye exams, tailored treatment plans, and dedicated follow-up to ensure every child gets the right diagnosis — and the right tools — to succeed.

Today, Eyes Plus, Inc. is more than just an optometry clinic — it’s a family-focused practice that believes in educating the community, preserving vision, and uplifting Hawai‘i’s next generation through proactive care. Every child deserves a chance to succeed in school and in life, and that success begins with clear vision and a team that sees the whole picture.
