HONOLULU (HI Now) - Pu’uhona Homestead is a landmark affordable housing development in Waikapū, Maui, created through a partnership between the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL), Central Pacific Bank (CPB), and Dowling Company. The project delivers 161 lots, including 137 turn-key, single-family homes to Native Hawaiian beneficiaries—many of whom have waited decades for the chance to live on homestead land. With five home models to choose from and essential infrastructure included, the project also features a unique 99-year land lease model from DHHL at $1 per year, allowing families to own their homes while securing long-term residency.
As the project’s lead lender, CPB played a critical role in supporting homeownership by providing mortgage financing tailored to the needs of DHHL beneficiaries. Recognizing the financial barriers many families face, CPB offered a $5,000 lender credit, which, combined with a $5,000 DHHL grant, gave buyers up to $10,000 in assistance. This collaboration reflects CPB’s longstanding mission to uplift local communities and provide financial solutions that open doors to stability and opportunity.
