HONOLULU (HI Now) - Join the Honolulu Jazz Quartet (HJQ) as they celebrate 24 years of timeless jazz at Manoa Valley Theatre on April 16 at 7 PM. Founded in 2001 by renowned local bassist John Kolivas, HJQ features Tim Tsukiyama (sax), Dan Del Negro (piano), Noel Okimoto (drums), and Kolivas himself on bass. Known for blending classic jazz with a modern flair, their critically acclaimed work recently earned them the 2023 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Jazz Album of the Year.
This special concert, titled “100 Years of Jazz,” is narrated by Robert Pennybacker and takes audiences on a musical journey through the eras—featuring pieces by legends like Louis Armstrong, Gershwin, Miles Davis, and Norah Jones. The night also includes exciting performances by guest artists Kainalu Kolivas (guitar/vocals), Jeannette Trevias (vocals), and DeShannon Higa (trumpet).
Expect unforgettable moments like the original New Orleans-style tune “Right Back with the Snack” by Tim Tsukiyama and a soulful rendition of the classic “Scarborough Fair.”
Presented by the Henry Kapono Foundation’s Music Makers Concert Series, this event supports local talent and honors Hawai’i’s vibrant musical legacy.
