Hōkūleʻa: 50 years of voyaging, legacy, and celebration Celebrating 50 years of Hōkūleʻa’s voyaging legacy with events, education, and a special anniversary collection!

HONOLULU (HI Now) - Hōkūleʻa was launched in 1975 as part of a cultural renaissance to revive Hawaiian wayfinding and navigation techniques. Built by the Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS), the canoe was designed to demonstrate that Polynesians intentionally navigated and settled the Pacific using the stars, ocean swells, and natural elements.

In 1976, Hōkūleʻa embarked on its historic first voyage, sailing from Hawaiʻi to Tahiti without modern instruments. Guided by master navigator Mau Piailug, the journey successfully proved the validity of traditional navigation and sparked a revival of Hawaiian cultural identity and voyaging traditions. This milestone set the foundation for Hōkūleʻa’s 50-year legacy of exploration, education, and cultural reconnection.

As part of Hōkūleʻa’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the Bishop Museum will host a special event on March 14, highlighting its long-standing support for the canoe and its role in research and education. The event will showcase the history of the partnership between the museum and Hōkūleʻa, emphasizing the cultural and educational impact of the voyaging tradition. Additionally, Aloha de Mele has collaborated with Hōkūleʻa to create a special 50th Anniversary Collection inspired by elements of the canoe’s construction and symbolism. The first artwork in the collection features the “Hanaiakamalama” or Southern Cross lashing style, one of the many lashings that help keep Hōkūleʻa strong and steady as she navigates the ocean. The second design is inspired by the wooden “donuts” used in the canoe’s rigging, which ensure the ropes remain tight against strong sea winds, often adorned with ti leaves for luck and protection. Merchandise will be available exclusively in person during Hōkūleʻa’s birthday celebration events the weekend of March 8, with online sales launching on March 17 at Hokulea.com and alohademele.com.
