HONOLULU (HI Now) - The Public Schools on Military Installations (PSMI) initiative is a federally funded program aimed at rebuilding and renovating public schools near military bases to provide high-quality education for both military and civilian students. Hawai’i is set to receive approximately $1 billion through this initiative, with $500 million already committed by the Department of Defense and another $500 million expected in the coming years.
This funding has already led to significant improvements, including the renovation of Daniel K. Inouye Elementary School and the complete rebuild of Samuel K. Solomon Elementary School. One of the major ongoing projects is the reconstruction of Mokapu Elementary, which serves a high percentage of military-connected students. The new facility will feature modern classrooms, advanced technology, and flexible learning spaces.
This initiative benefits both military families and the local community by improving overall education quality in Hawai’i. It also supports military recruitment and retention by ensuring service members’ children have access to excellent schools. With additional funding on the way, more schools near military bases will be modernized to meet the needs of all students.
