The Sewing Hui: supporting and empowering the Maui community one stitch at a time

The Sewing Hui: supporting and empowering the Maui community one stitch at a time Jennifer Oberg, founder of The Sewing Hui, shares their journey and mission to support Maui by creating hand-sewn items for local organizations.

HONOLULU (HI Now) - The Sewing Hui evolved out of the Maui Face Mask Project. That project, conducted in the Spring of 2020, was started to address the critical shortage of N-95 face masks on Maui. The project created 10,411 high quality filter face masks for Maui’s healthcare providers.  These face masks were modeled after a flat-fold N-95 face mask provided by Kaiser Permanente Maui Lani Clinic.

After the project was completed on May 15, 2020, the volunteers wanted to continue sewing for the community. The Sewing Hui volunteers are a dedicated team who create and sew a variety of projects for Maui. We create sewing initiatives to benefit the Maui community, spanning healthcare providers, schools, and community and performing arts organizations. Founded and directed by dressmaker Jennifer Oberg, The Sewing Hui is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
