HONOLULU (HI Now) - This weekend, 5,000 athletes from 13 states and six countries are in Hawaii for the 7th annual TransPacific Volleyball Championship. Beyond competing, they are engaging in Hawaiian cultural activities.
On Thursday, 70 players and coaches from the U.S. and Canada joined a cultural excursion in Waimanalo, learning about local history, restoring natural watersheds, rebuilding terraces, and planting tea leaves as part of preservation efforts. Organizers emphasized connecting visitors to the land and fostering a sense of community Participants reflected on teamwork and life lessons learned through volleyball and expressed gratitude for the immersive experience.
The event kicks off on Friday, January 17th with an opening ceremony and luau at the Ala Moana Center featuring entertainment from the Polynesian Cultural Center as well as performances from Johnny Suite and The Vitals. Tournament play will take place at the Hawaii Convention center and at other various locations across Oahu starting on Saturday, January 18th and wrapping up with the tournament championships on Monday, January 20th.
