HONOLULU (HI Now) - Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke is an award-winning vocational training organization founded and based in Hana, Maui, Hawaiʻi. Our approach is to teach academic subjects through real-life, hands-on application, where students can understand the concepts, they’re learning through tangible examples. But these aren’t just examples for learning’s sake. Our projects meet real school and community needs, so our students’ education prioritizes service and giving back.
Self-sustenance, community relationship, cultural connection—these are some of the principles we aim to pass onto the next generation, as we create caretakers of our future and leaders of our island.
A core aspect of the work we do intersects the generations, past/present/future, and nurtures the deep connection between children, young adults and their elders.
Lehua and Kamaile, kupuna and wahi coordinators for Ma Ka Hana Ka ʻIke, talk about how we come together to care for our cherished kupuna, ensure their knowledge is not lost and empower the next generation to ʻauamo kuleana (carry their kuleana).
