HONOLULU (HI Now) - Today, November 21st is Children’s Grief Awareness Day. It is meant to raise awareness of the impact of loss on children and to ensure they have the support they need. Let Grace In is a 501c3 organization that supports the whole family grieving the death of a child. Our mission is to restore hope to our families by building community and fostering physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. My husband Ka’eo and I founded LGI in 2017 in honor of our 5-year-old son Grayson, who died in 2016 of an aggressive brain cancer called Glioblastoma.
They offer monthly therapeutic events & Hope Retreats. Hope Retreats are extended time away to unplug and invite our families into holistic “whole-person” experiential activities grounded in research, culture, & experience. We offer separate facilitated programing for parents and siblings, so each has their own safe space to express their grief without worrying about saying what is truly on their hearts. Often, the grieving siblings don’t get the support & attention they need because parents are overwhelmed by their own grief.
Last year, they expanded their Hope Retreat to the neighbor islands, starting with Molokai. In July this year, just before the anniversary of the fires, they took their Hope Retreat to Kaanapali and served 8 grieving families (32 grieving family members). Collaboration is important to them and they partnered with a national organization and a local Maui organization to support our grieving siblings with meaningful time and space to express with trained facilitators.
