HONOLULU (HI Now) -The 154th Wing of the Hawaii Air National Guard hosts the Pacific Energy Assurance Renewables Laboratory (PEARL), a pioneering microgrid project designed to harness renewable energy for military and community use. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving the Hawaii Center for Advanced Transportation Technologies, the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Hawaii Air National Guard, and local partners A&E Burns and McDonnell.
PEARL utilizes renewable energy sources such as solar power and battery storage to supply essential infrastructure, creating a self-sufficient energy system that operates independently from traditional utility grids. This microgrid not only supports the energy needs of the Hawaii National Guard but also serves as a demonstration site for advancing renewable energy technologies.
The PEARL project aligns with Hawaii’s ambitious goal to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2045, positioning the microgrid as a crucial player in the state’s transition away from fossil fuels. As it leads the way in innovative energy solutions, PEARL exemplifies how military initiatives can contribute to broader environmental objectives and community resilience.
