HONOLULU (HI Now) - Explore the Okinawan Festival Attractions at the Okinawan Festival Foods from August 31-Sept. 1 and the Okinawan FEASTival: A Celebration of Okinawan Cuisine from Sept. 2-16!
At the Okinawan Festival, majority of the food is made by volunteers. 130,000 andagi will be made over two days! Andadog, Okidog, Okinawa Soba, Yakisoba, Pigs Feet Soup, Okinawan Plate (champuru, shoyu pork, rice with andamiso). The Country Store will feature products from local businesses to eat at festival or take home. Many are Okinawan owned. Most popular are Andamiso (Okinawan pork miso) and Aloha Tofu’s Jimami (peanut) tofu, made just for festival. The Heiwa Dori will feature food items brought in from Okinawa. This is a great way to taste your way thru Okinawa. Most popular are kombu (dried kelp), goya champuru flavor packs, kokuto (Okinawan black sugar), Okinawa soba noodles.
From September 2-16 visit the Okinawan FEASTival: A Celebration of Okinawan Cuisine! There have been over 350 Okinawan owned restaurants in Hawai’i since 1923. Today, there are 66 Okinawan owned restaurants and food businesses operating in O’ahu. A lot of people don’t know what Okinawan food and drinks are, so this is a great time to learn and support our local businesses. There are 25 restaurants participating this year. Aloha Tofu is taking pre-orders for their Jimami (peanut) tofu for pick up at the factory. Sunrise Restaurant will be making off menu soups like Nakami. KC Waffle Dog is making a Rafute (Okinawan shoyu pork) Waffle with Da ‘Ohana Kine Snack Shop, Okinawan at Heart restaurants like Kapa Hale created Anda da Sea, crispy crab, shrimp and corn hush puppy andagi. ZIGU is making their version of Rafute, Okinawa Soba and Chin-bin, an Okinawan crepe. Purve Donuts are making a hybrid andagi donut they are calling Purvedagi.
