HONOLULU (HI Now) - Duke’s OceanFest will once again kick-off on August 16th and carry through August 25th, on the shores of iconic Waikiki Beach, where Duke groomed his athletic skills that elevated him into becoming the pioneer of “Waterman” an Olympic champion, and the Ambassador of Aloha! Duke’s disciplines of Surfing, Swimming, Outrigger Canoe paddling, Surfboard Water Polo, Beach Volleyball, along with evolutions of his influence that include Foil boarding, Tandem surfing and Dog Surfing are shared throughout the weeklong festival by local, mainland and international competitors and lifestyle enthusiasts.
It will also be a particularly special year for Hawaii as it is the year of the XXXIII Olympiad, Carissa Moore and John John Florence will once again represent USA in the sport of Surfing, and our USA Volleyball team will include starting Hawaiian players Micah Christensen, Erik Shoji and Micah Ma’a! It is also the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Olympics, where Duke Kahanamoku earned Silver and his brother Sam earned the Bronze medal in Swimming. The backstroke was won by Duke’s cousin, Warren Paoa Kealoha and their were a total of 8 Hawaiian swimmers on the US Olympic team!
