The connection between oral health and mental health Kahala Howser Pimentel, Wellness and Events Manager with Hawaii Dental Service, shares with us the connection between oral health and our overall health!

HONOLULU (HI Now) - Many of us may know there is a connection between oral health and our overall health, but studies also show there is also a connection between oral health and mental health. Our teeth and gums affect the rest of our bodies. When we have a toothache, it affects our entire well-being. When we have bacteria in our mouth, it can spread to other parts of our body and lead to heart disease and strokes. It goes the other way, too. Certain diseases like diabetes can also affect our teeth and gums.

It’s important to protect your oral health, mental health and overall body health. Make these priorities. When you brush twice a day, floss daily, and see a dentist twice a year for checkups, and make other healthy choices, you’re not only doing your mouth and teeth a favor, but also helping to keep your mind and body in good health.
