HONOLULU (HI Now) - The Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) Facility at the Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant, turns gases that are a byproduct of wastewater treatment and clean-burning biomethane. This Renewable Natural Gas is then added to Hawaiʻi Gas’ utility fuel mix on O’ahu, which fuels homes and businesses across the island. This facility is the first one like it in the state, and it’s been operating since 2018.
The Honouliuli Wastewater Treatment Plant is a partnership between Hawaiʻi Gas and the City and County of Honolulu. In 2015, the City and County of Honolulu put out an RFP to sell biogas, and Hawai’i Gas was awarded the project and became our partner. This facility opened in 2018. They think of it as a win-win-win by many – it’s a win for the environment, as it makes use of a waste product and reduces emissions equivalent to taking 400 cars off the road annually, a win for the City: receives a revenue stream for its waste gas from the Honouliuli wastewater treatment plant, and it’s a win for O’ahu customers, as Hawaiʻi Gas delivers a locally-produced green gas to its Oʻahu customers at an affordable price.
The plant supplies new revenue for the county, provides green jobs and produces renewable gas that is safely distributed to utility customers via underground pipelines.
Hawai’i Gas continues to explore a variety of different renewable energy projects across the islands. In May, they announced the selection of two new renewable energy projects on O’ahu, including another Renewable Natural Gas project in partnership with Bana Pacific – that one will use the non-invasive bana grass as a feedstock to produce RNG. They’re committed to being a leader in the delivery of green renewable fuels in Hawai’i and beyond, reducing our carbon footprint and reliance on fossil fuels.
