HONOLULU (HI Now) - The wishes that Make-A-Wish Hawaii grants wouldn’t be possible without the support of countless “WishMakers” stepping up throughoutthe process. “WishMakers,” a term attributed to anyone who donates their time, talent or treasure to Make-A-Wish, are everywhere, but more “WishMakers” are needed in order for Make-A-Wish Hawaii to achieve its goal to bring the life-changing impact of a wish to every eligible child across the state.

Dr. Kelley Hutchins, a pediatric hematology/oncology doctor affiliated with Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women & Children, is a WishMaker and serves on Make-A-Wish Hawaii’s Medical Advisory Board. Since partnering with Make-A-Wish Hawaii in 2018, she has referred morethan 50 patients for the life-changing power of a wish.

Kyra is a teenager from Kapolei who had lymphoma. During her chemotherapy treatments, all Kyra wanted was to go to school with her friends and live a normal childhood. Kyra’s medical team referred her to Make-A-Wish Hawaii for the life-changing power of a wish, giving her something positive to focus on during her medical journey and providing hope for her future. Kyra’s most heartfelt wish was to have a shopping spree. It took her mind off treatments and appointments, bringing her joy while she researched the latest technology from Apple and making a wish list for the day her wish would be granted. Kyra’s wish to have a shopping shopping spree was granted in August 2023 at Ala Moana Center.

Wishes are powerful medicine that give children the physical and emotional strength they need to fight a critical illness. If you would like to donate your time, talent, or treasure to help make wishes come true for keiki like Kyra, go to hawaii.wish.org/world-wish-month to sign up to be a Wish Maker today.
