HONOLULU (HI Now) - Hawaii Tourism Authority launched Mākaukau Maui to give a voice to residents who want to get back to work in Maui’s visitor industry.
The best way to support Maui today is by traveling there. About 70% of every dollar in Maui County is directly or indirectly generated from tourism, according to the Maui Economic Development Board. Maui is open for visitors, however, it’s not just about boosting the economy; it’s about preserving the soul of our community.
While Lahaina will remain fully closed to the public, other parts of Maui are opening its doors to visitors to foster stability and economic recovery for its residents. They’re hopeful and optimistic that Maui can share its culture with those beyond its shores.
